Description
Many aspects of Ferenc Liszt's diverse life and oeuvre are well known: the extraordinary success of the piano virtuoso entering Europe is well known, the most important works of the progressive composer based in Weimar form the basis of the concert repertoire. , his lean works point back to the 20th century. Within this multifaceted oeuvre, the song is mostly one of the most important and intimate genres of the Romantic era. Péter Bozó's monograph guides the reader into the little-known world of Liszt songs and provides a picture of this exciting repertoire based on primary sources and the latest literature. He reviews the chronology, reception, and various editions of Liszt’s songs; discusses the various variants of the works and the peculiar flourist thinking behind them; and enumerates the major types of songs through sensitive analysis. In addition to outlining the 19th century context of the song's genre, it also describes in detail the historical background that is essential for understanding Liszt's art, which has several musical-national identities (Hungarian, French, German). Thus, Péter Bozó’s book offers an exciting intellectual adventure not only for singers, Liszt fans and lovers of songwriting, but also for a wider readership interested in 19th century music and cultural history. Péter Bozó (1980) is a music historian, and since 2006 he has been an employee of the Hungarian Department of Music History of the Institute of Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He obtained his PhD doctoral degree from the Weimar source studies at the Budapest Academy of Music in 2010, with the doctoral dissertation on which this book is based. As a postdoctoral fellow, OTKA conducted research on the beginnings of operetta in Paris and its practice in Hungary. He is currently studying the reception of Jacques Offenbach's works in Hungary as a Bolyai Scholar.
