Joe Turner works for a literary company that is actually one of the CIA’s cover agencies. His job is to read every new book (including tarpaulins) and gather useful ideas from them. On a rainy day, a man returning from lunch finds his colleagues dead. He calls his superiors excitedly, but they also want to kill him at the scheduled meeting. Turner takes a young woman hostage with a self-defense weapon taken from her dead colleague and tries to find her way around the increasingly confusing events.
