Description
11th century Hungarian art is a world full of hypotheses due to the large-scale destruction of memories and the lack of written sources. We have only one pictorial source about the church of the Benedictine abbey in Zalavár: a 16th century survey drawing of the site transformed into a border fortress. The castle was blown up in 1702, then the remaining stones were scattered and used for various constructions. However, it is not hopeless to learn about it, because stone carvings have been unearthed from the area, on the basis of which we can form an idea of the former church. Writing art history has long considered these carvings to be among the earliest memories of Christianity in Hungary. The remaining fragments are therefore not only significant for the former Church of St. Adorjan, but also provide insight into issues related to stone carving during the founding of the state, especially the liturgical furnishings of our former churches.
