James Whitey Bulger is the younger brother of an influential politician. When La Cosa Nostra tried to push his gang out of town in the mid-1970s, up-and-coming FBI agent John Connolly offered the small-time gangster a devil's bargain: provide information about the Italian mafia in exchange for protection. After eliminating the competition, Whitey became the ruthless leader of the Irish mafia and took control of Boston, but his deal with Connolly and the FBI got out of control and led to the biggest whistleblower scandal in the United States. Whitey Bulger was in hiding for sixteen years, he was the FBI's second most wanted criminal after Osama bin Laden, and he was finally captured in 2011. Since 2013, he has been serving a life sentence for extortion, money laundering, usury and 11 counts of murder. Based on a true story, the book chronicles the rise and fall of a psychopathic criminal, the authors, former journalists Dick Lehr and Gerard ONeill, investigated the case from the beginning. The book was made into a movie in 2015 starring Johnny Depp.
