Description
Its castle lexicon series processes all the castles and mansions of the country in terms of history, art history, architecture history and family history. The buildings are illustrated by hundreds of color (aerial and ground) photographs of the current state, as well as archival footage of the older state. (Most of the latter have not yet been published.) The volumes include both standing and demolished buildings - the latter in a separate chapter. In the castle lexicon we process not only the listed but also the unprotected buildings. At the end of the books is a map, as well as a variety of appendices and indexes, perhaps the most interesting of which is the grouping by former owner families. But an index of names, a list of local history literature, and a list of selected literature can also be found in the book, and the most important sources are included in a tabular system. The volumes can be used in many ways, "multifunctionally", for example, they can be used in the course of education, from the local history specialties of primary school to university seminars. The articles in the volumes of the lexicon follow a uniform structure for each building and include: - the (brief) history of the builder's family, - the history of the castle or mansion, - the history of the building ( , the data of its extension, - the artistic description of the residence, - its fate after 1945, - its current utilization, - the basic information about the park, - an interesting contemporary story about the famous owners and famous guests, - the tourist attractions of the given settlement. The research is based on a computer database compiled by the author with a decade of research. Field research, which takes place in three phases, also plays a very important role. About a quarter of the buildings that are still the material of the volumes are listed. 45% of unprotected castles and mansions have never appeared in print, and almost 30% of them have hardly appeared. The significance of the Hungarian Castle Lexicon series is given by the fact that it is the first to try to enumerate and process all the former castles and mansions of Hungary in a basic research way - with (yet) lexical conciseness, limited to the most important data.
