It is an important member of the B-vitamin family
Water soluble vitamin. Niacinamide is an important member of the vitamin B family. Niacinamide or nicotinamide is a derivative of niacin (vitamin b3) of the same name. However, unlike niacin, it does not cause unpleasant redness and itching.
The body itself is able to produce vitamin B3 from an amino acid called tryptophan. The breakdown of protein-rich foods consumed also produces an amino acid called tryptophan, from which the liver produces vitamin B3. Roughly half of the tryptophan we consume is used by our body to build its own proteins. It produces vitamin B3 from the residue. Exactly 60mg of tryptophan consumed produces 1mg of niacin. Since the Hungarian population consumes somewhere between 500 and 1000 mg of tryptophan per day, it can be easily calculated that the body can produce roughly 8-16 mg of vitamin B3.
Because daily dietary recommendations do not take into account this own niacin (vitamin B3) production and only measure the niacin content of our foods, it appears that 11mg daily is the niacin content of an average diet. Interestingly, it is precisely those foods that are rich in niacin that are also high in tryptophan. (source: vitamin bible)
