Description
The Origin of Words workbook introduces upper secondary and high school students to the field of etymology through seven smaller chapters. Some of the tasks in it require the use of a computer, others require creativity, language ingenuity, proficiency in youth language or gastronomy, or just a poetic vein. In many cases, students also have to use their foreign language competence. In the first chapter, Heritage, students will learn about our Uralic, Finno-Ugric words, as well as some Estonian and Finnish terms. In the second part, the newcomer elements of the Hungarian language appear, from the early adoptions to the use of the folk language. In the Birth of Words chapter, you can learn about, among other things, who we call panda stones, how proper names became common names, what the abbreviation http means, and where the name Fanta comes from. The fourth part provides a number of exercises for understanding the connections between word and meaning. The fifth chapter, Language Trinkets, brings the worldview reflected in the Hungarian vocabulary closer to the students. In the sixth part, students can become language innovators, they can test their creativity and language skills through exercises. The seventh chapter guides students into the latest layer of vocabulary change: they may come across the words that net linguistics deals with today. At the end of the volume is a solution key that also allows you to work from home. We recommend it to students, parents and educators alike.
