Description
György Závodszky's diary can be read in Hungarian translation for the first time. The author was born in 1569, as a descendant of a noble family from the county of Trencsén. He was secretary to Palatine György Thurzó and later to his son Imre. In some cases, the diary provides current, personal experiences, other times reports of national importance (the beginning of the Bocskai Uprising, the coronation of Matthias II). There is no shortage of extraordinary events: earthquakes, fires, and the occasional recording of grain prices. The Závodszky diary was first published in Latin by Mátyás Bél in 1735. It is now published in Péter Tusor's translation, with a preface and notes, including a facsimile of the original Latin text.
