Companion to workouts
L-carnitine is a complex amino acid made up of two essential amino acids in the human body: lysine and methionine. It used to be classified as a vitamin, but man can also produce it, so it is not considered a vitamin. Healthy people usually produce the required amount, but heart patients or athletes need a larger amount, so they need to collect it separately as a dietary supplement.
Why is L-carnitine important?
It is essential for the heart muscle as well as for growth and muscle development. The body produces energy in the internal organ of the cell called the mitochondria, where long-chain fatty acids can only get there with the help of carnitine. In the absence of L-carnitine or in the presence of insufficient carnitine, this process stops.
Carnitine can be produced by our body if we have enough iron, vitamins B1 and B6, and two amino acids lysine and methionine in our diet. The synthesis of l-carnitine also depends on our vitamin C supply.
Lack of any of these can lead to carnitine deficiency. L-carnitine can be obtained from foods of animal origin - primarily red meats - but a dietitian does not eat much of it, a vegetarian does almost nothing. It was first isolated from meat in 1905, and its name derives from it (carnus, carn- ~ meat).
The daily amount used is usually between 500-2500mg. It is available in Europe as a dietary supplement in 500-1000mg. The 500mg versions are the most popular in Hungary, but they are also appearing today with an ever-increasing active ingredient content.
It is safe to use, however, consuming doses above 3000 mg can cause fishy odor due to the breakdown of intestinal bacteria by carnitine.
It is safe to use. Even at high doses, it has no known side effects.
