The core of the plot is a historical fact: a duel between the viceroy Görgey and the city of Levoča. Mikszáth saw the attractive, respectful Puritanism and warm colors of the former bourgeoisie, and the steely character of clever men like the alumnus Görgey. But he showed that these individual good qualities saved nothing where the whole soul had already been distorted by the sin that would later become fatal: the worship of wealth, the oligarchy, the narrow-mindedness. Romeo and Juliet's eternal motif was accused of the relentlessly torn romantic love of Görgey's daughter-in-law, Rozalia Otrokóczy, and the young citizen of Levoča, Antal Fabricius. All this together expressed what the novel had to say: lords and citizens cannot stand up for life, for man, they cannot stand up for the nation.
