AD one hundred and eighty. Emperor Marcus Aurelius is dead. His son and his heir, Commodus, had hitherto been known by the imperial family and his immediate surroundings as a lame and outspoken young man. However, the spiritual legacy of mourning and his father seems to have initiated a profound change in the heir to the throne: he publicly undertakes to continue Marcus Aurelius ’policy and vows to put the Germanic tribes on the north coast of Danuvius to their knees once and for all with one last campaign. The victory of Marcus Aurelius over the Marcomannians did not bring a final truce: the more or less barbaric ethnic groups believe that the Roman legions are tired in the last campaign and that their morale has faltered since the emperor's death.
