József Tornai was born on October 9, 1927 in Dunaharasztin, Pest County. He completed his schools locally and in Budapest. Until 1961, he worked in a factory. Freelancer until 1976. Until 1987, he was the head of the Contemporary Poetry Division. From 1992 to 1995 he was president of the Writers' Association. In 1975 he received the Attila József Prize, in 1998 the János Arany Prize, in 2001 the Laurel Wreath Prize, in 2012 the Prima Prize, in 2013 the Kossuth Prize, and from 2014 the Artist of the Nation.
