The novel unabashedly depicts the atrocities taking place in Soviet labor camps, specifically in the Kolima gulag, bringing an era closer to our history. The novel is based on documents and confessions transformed into fiction, and it is from these that the atmosphere-creating force that disguises the evils of Stalinism arises. The effect is strengthened by the fact that we can trace the fate, suffering and humiliation of Irena Kalaschová, a protagonist from the Slovak-German-Ruthenian family who speaks Hungarian.
